Central banks around the world are seeking to launch publicly run payment systems or central bank digital currencies. These projects aim to improve financial inclusion, reduce cash reliance and provide cheap, safe, efficient and reliable digital payments. The m-pesa stands out as a success story in mobile money banking and should be studied as an example of how to achieve these objectives.

Sheila M’Mbijjewe, former deputy governor at the Central Bank of Kenya, joins OMFIF to explore the achievements of the m-pesa. We will explore how lessons around achieving financial inclusion, gaining public trust, mitigating risk of crime and keeping solutions adaptable to an evolving environment may be applied to other CBDC or public payments projects.
