Charting the digital euro’s next steps

The digital euro project has made considerable progress since its launch in 2021. As its investigation phase now draws to a close, the European Central Bank is preparing its opinions on the legislative proposals and will report on the findings in the coming months.

Ulrich Bindseil, director general of market infrastructures and payments, ECB, joined OMFIF to share his vision for a digital currency and its potential to revolutionise payments for retail users in the euro area. Design options endorsed so far were discussed as well as key findings from the prototype and stakeholder collaboration. Progress on a draft rulebook for a digital euro scheme and considerations for what moving into the project’s next phase might look like were also explored.
