State of public finances and economic prospects in Latin America post Covid-19
Following the inaugural conference ‘Canada, the Americas and the Global Economy: Investing in an interconnected world’, Scotiabank and OMFIF host Joaquim Levy, former president of the Brazilian Development Bank. He reflects on the key challenges and opportunities facing Latin America in dealing with the economic and financial fallout from Covid-19 pandemic. Themes of focus will include:

Mr. Levy is currently an Academic Fellow at Stanford University’s Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance.
Mr. Levy served as President of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) from 2018 to 2019. Prior to accepting this appointment, Mr. Levy served as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of the World Bank. During his time at the World Bank, he was responsible for the financial and risk management strategies including development of new, innovative financial products and services, oversight of the financial reporting, risk management, and mobilization of financial resources in alignment with the WBG’s strategy. Previously, Mr. Levy served as the Minister of Finance for the Federal Republic of Brazil, working with the president and government in reforming the world’s fifth largest economy. From 2010 to 2014, he was chief executive officer of Bradesco Asset Management. In 2007, he was appointed secretary of finance of the state of Rio de Janeiro
