Following the Christian Democratic Union congress on 16 January, Germany is looking to new leadership in 2021 to navigate its Covid-19 recovery. Ludger Schuknecht, deputy secretary-general of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development, joins Nathan Sheets, chief economist and head of global macroeconomic research at PGIM, to discuss Germany’s future political direction and its relationship with Europe, the US and China. They cover the potential end of the Maastricht Treaty’s debt spending limit, moves towards a fiscal union in Europe and what that means for German leadership.
