This virtual roundtable convenes leading economists from public and private sector institutions to examine the global economic outlook and the forces shaping growth, inflation and financial markets.

The discussion examines monetary and fiscal developments across major economies, as well as the implications of geopolitical tensions and structural shifts in the global economy.

Participants are encouraged to engage actively throughout the session.

Johanna is a Managing Director, Head of Emerging Market Economics and Chief Asia Economist at Citigroup.  Based in Hong Kong since 2000, she recently assumed the role overseeing economic research across Emerging Markets including Emerging Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa and Latin America.  Prior to her appointing, she was the head of Economics Research for Asia-Pacific, covering China, India, Korea, ASEAN, frontier Asian markets, as well as developed economies like Japan and Australia.   Previously, Johanna was the Chief Asia Emerging Markets Trading Strategist (Fixed Income, Commodities and Currencies) and the Asia Sovereign Fixed Income Analyst prior to 2009.

Johanna Chua has been a regular participant in the Track II Economic Dialogue of the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSR) and had previously been a private sector member of the Moody’s-Petersen Institute for International Economics (PIIE) Sovereign Risk Panel.

Johanna and her team ranked number #1 in Asia Economics in 4 of the 5 Global Fixed Income Institutional Investor (II) from 2019-2023.  Her team ranked #3 in the equity-focused Asia-Pacific II in 2022 and 2021 and runner up in 2020. She has been consistently ranked at the top of various fixed income surveys by The Asset, FinanceAsia and Eleonora (for European investors) for several years throughout her career.

Johanna has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of the Philippines.

Krishna Guha is vice-chairman and head of economics and central bank strategy at Evercore ISI. In this role, he leads Evercore’s work on the U.S. and global economy, monetary policy and financial stability. He is an expert on geoeconomics and focuses on the intersection of macro, policy and markets. Mr. Guha is top ranked on the Extel (formerly Institutional Investor) All‐America Team for Washington research.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Guha was executive vice president, member of the management committee and head of the communications group at the New York Fed. He also chaired the New York Fed’s policy speech-writing process, co-chaired its housing policy working group and managed a department of about 60 officials.

Previously, Mr. Guha was a senior writer on global economics and economic policy at the Financial Times. Accolades include the Best in Business award by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers for his work on the financial crisis.

Mr. Guha is a member of the Economic Club of New York, the National Association for Business Economics and has also served as a member of the board of directors of the Fulbright Association

Tara Hariharan is managing director and head of global macro research at NWI Management LP, a New York City-based global macro hedge fund. She leads top-down analysis of economic activity, policy, and macro-political issues for countries globally, and created NWI’s proprietary “macro dashboard” to identify strategic investment opportunities in fixed income, foreign exchange, equities, and commodities. Hariharan regularly presents her assessments of China’s economy and U.S.-China relations to senior U.S. and emerging markets policymakers and International Monetary Fund representatives. She was a 2024 recipient of the Crain’s New York Business “40 Under 40” award. She features on CNBC and Bloomberg Television and is quoted by Reuters as an expert on China, emerging markets and global macro; and is a seasoned public speaker and moderator of events on global economics, financial markets and foreign policy, and transatlantic relations with a focus on the German economy.

 

Hariharan also serves on the boards of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the American Council on Germany and the Millennium Fellowship Program Advisory Council at the Atlantic Council. She is an active life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the Inter-American Dialogue, the Economic Club of New York and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Chief Economists’ Committee.  Hariharan was a 2023 Millennium Leadership Fellow at the Atlantic Council, a 2022 Economic Club of New York Fellow, a 2017-2021 Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations, a 2016 American Council on Germany Young Leader, and a 2014 German Marshall Fund Marshall Memorial Fellow.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology summa cum laude from Princeton University and a graduate certificate in International Relations from Harvard Extension School.

Mark Sobel is Chief Economist and Vice Chair at OMFIF. Mark is a veteran US Treasury official, who was at the forefront of international financial diplomacy for two decades.

Mark, who represented the US on the International Monetary Fund executive board up to April 2018, has had a 40-year Treasury career with extensive around-the-world engagement.

He works with OMFIF in dealings with private and public sector organisations, speak regularly on international and US policy, and provide OMFIF members with insight and analysis.

Mark was Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary for international monetary and financial policy between 2000 and early 2015. He helped lead Treasury preparations for G7 and G20 finance minister and central bank governor meetings, formulated US positions at the IMF, and coordinated Treasury and regulatory agencies’ work in the Financial Stability Board.

Mark founded the US/EU Financial Market Regulatory Dialogue and chaired an international group of private and official sovereign debt experts that developed enhanced collective action clauses for sovereign debt restructuring. He managed the $100bn-plus Treasury Exchange Stabilization Fund and played a key role in US foreign exchange policy including coordinating the Treasury’s semi-annual foreign exchange report on China and other countries.
