Russian and US officials recently held initial talks on ending the Ukraine war while excluding Kyiv. Against this backdrop and the prospect of future negotiations, Philip Short, journalist and author, joins OMFIF to discuss the factors which will influence an eventual settlement and whether President Vladimir Putin’s strategic goals can be achieved.

He delves into the state of the Russian economy, the two side’s abilities, and particularly the capacity of Ukraine, to continue the war, and the role of Europe.

Philip Short’s biography of Vladimir Putin, Putin: His Life and Times was published in 2022.
