Strengthening monetary infrastructure across borders: the evolving role of digital public money
As digital money and payments systems continue to evolve, central banks are reassessing how they provide public money to ensure that it continues to play its role in maintaining trust, resilience and interoperability across the financial system. Alongside developments in wholesale CBDC, tokenised forms of money and next-generation financial market infrastructure, policy-makers face important questions about how public and private forms of money can coexist to support innovation while preserving monetary sovereignty, strengthening cross-border interoperability and maintaining financial stability.
OMFIF’s Digital Monetary Institute, in collaboration with Giesecke+Devrient, convenes a private roundtable with central bank leaders and selected private sector experts to discuss the evolving role of digital public money in the future monetary system. Drawing on insights from OMFIF’s recent central bank survey, the discussion considers how to support the continued evolution of monetary and financial infrastructure, recent developments in cross-border CBDC initiatives and the role of public money in the next generation of international payments infrastructure. The roundtable will explore:
- How is the role of digital public money evolving as central banks modernise monetary and financial infrastructure?
- As payments and settlement systems move gradually onto distributed ledgers, what role should central banks play in shaping the underlying infrastructure, standards and frameworks for the future of money?
- How should public and private forms of digital money interact to support innovation while maintaining trust, interoperability and resilience across domestic and cross-border payments systems?
- How can digital public money continue to serve as an anchor for confidence, monetary sovereignty and financial stability in an increasingly digital financial system?
