Mexico’s economic adaptation: challenges, resilience and outlook

While the US Federal Reserve’s monetary tightening has boosted the dollar against most global currencies, the Mexican peso is one of the best performers this year. This roundtable discusses the factors underpinning the resilience of the Mexican peso, the outlook for the economy and currency in 2024 amid elections in both Mexico and the US, and how the Mexican economy can benefit from the ‘nearshoring’ of US supply chains.

Alejandrina Salcedo is director general of economic research at Banco de México. Before her present role, she has held several positions at Banco de México, such as director of prices, regional economies and information analysis, director of economic measurement and manager of the real sector research division. Salcedo has also served as chief economist of Mexico’s ministry of finance.
