Research into wholesale central bank digital currencies and their possible role in the future of financial markets is maturing, while retail CBDCs seem to be taking a back seat. One of the institutions playing a leading role in the exploration of wCBDC and distributed ledger technology is the South African Reserve Bank. With the recent publication of their Project Khokha phase two report, Lyle Horsley, head of fintech, joins OMFIF to discuss SARB’s findings and thoughts on feasible next steps.
