Speaker: Changyong Rhee, Director, Asia and Pacific Department, International Monetary Fund
Growth is expected to decelerate in many Asian economies in 2020, and questions are being raised about the region’s long-term trajectory and exposure to risks from overseas. A slowdown in China, persistently low growth in Japan and South Korea, and developments in Hong Kong have a dampening effect on the region’s performance, while economic expansion in India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations remains strong. Changyong Rhee, director of the International Monetary Fund’s Asia and Pacific department, discusses the region’s economic priorities for 2020, drawing on examples from China, Japan, India and Asean.
