The role:
The Head of Research in OMFIF’s Economic and Monetary Policy Institute oversees and helps execute our research projects and contributions generally to the firm’s intellectual and commercial output. Our projects range across central bank policies, public finances, development and integration of emerging market economies, global investment patterns (including by reserve managers), and geo-economic trends running across all the economic and monetary fields that we deal with.
Execution and management tasks include conceptual analysis in coordination with clients and other research sponsors, data collection, developing the written output, and building on linkages between project findings and real-life policies. You will manage a small team of economists and consultants to produce market-leading research within tight deadlines, liaising with clients, OMFIF colleagues, and external counterparties to maximise impact.
The successful candidate will play an active role in shaping and participating in the Economic and Monetary Policy Institute’s programme of meetings with policymakers and financial market participants, working cohesively and imaginatively with other colleagues across OMFIF. The candidate will be able to build on and expand our engagement with official economic and monetary institutions and private sector financial market participants across the world. He/she will work closely with OMFIF Chairman and Co-founder David Marsh.
Key responsibilities:
- Oversee production economic report from conceptual stage to output – including marketing, distribution, and follow-up work
- Contribute to OMFIF’s proprietary written and verbal output through provision of timely, succinct commentaries and analysis which form part of OMFIF’s regular economic and financial coverage, often linked to EMP event(podcast)
- Manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously, maintaining high quality while adhering to deadlines
- Line manages in-house economists and external contributors where appropriate
- Liaise with clients in planning and implementing projects.
- Moderate discussions and present research in OMFIF meetings and events.
- Build OMFIF’s relationships with public and private sector organisations globally.
Skills, experience and qualifications:
Required
- At least 5-7 years’ experience in an economics or financial markets research role.
- Keen interest in the global economy, combining dynamic results-orientated ‘can do’ attitude with ability to work in teams inside and outside OMFIF
- Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects
- Experience in managing a team, keeping them accountable while providing direction, training and support.
- Ability to write clearly on technical economics and financial market themes.
- Strong data analysis skill
- Good communications skill to communicate research findings.
- Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
 Desirable
- Specific on-the-job Experience in central bank policies, public finances, emerging market economies.
- Ability to conduct qualitative research, including surveys and interviews.
- Experience in supporting client relationships
- Ability to use economic and financial data platforms (e.g. LSEG Eikon)
- Knowledge of events management (workshops, seminars, conferences)
- Proficiency in other language(s) beyond English.
