For the launch of the sixth annual Global Public Investor in New York, OMFIF and Barings convened a panel in New York to discuss the potential causes, consequences and ways of mitigating the next financial crisis. Topics included how dollar dominance might end, a possible change in direction in European monetary policy and the exposure to global shocks of emerging economies. Representatives of leading European central banks debated well-publicised differences about how far quantitative easing and negative interest rates should run to boost economic growth and return the euro area inflation rate to the objective of ‘below but close to 2%’. The audience heard uncompromising views that the latest European Central Bank policies might well be counterproductive, countered by a plea that the ECB had to act to fulfil its price stability mandate.  There was a lively exchange on whether the renminbi could ever replace the dollar. The answer was: ‘Not any time soon.’
