Lord (Christopher) Tugendhat is a Conservative Member of the House of Lords where he sits on the European Union Select Committee. He also chairs its sub-committee on EU External Affairs, which covers Trade, Development, Foreign Affairs and Defence.

He is a former Vice-President of the European Commission (1981-85) as well as a former chairman of Abbey National, Blue Circle Industries, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Royal Institute of International Affairs and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is also a former Chancellor of the University of Bath. He has been awarded Honorary Degrees by the University of Bath and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and is an Honorary Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. 

From 1970 until 1976 he was Conservative Member of Parliament for the City of London and Westminster South and prior to that a Features and Leader Writer for the Financial Times. He is the author of Oil: The Biggest Business (1968), The Multinationals (1971) and Making Sense of Europe (1986).

He was knighted in 1991 and in 1993 created a life peer as Baron Tugendhat  of Widdington in the County of Essex.
