Otaviano Canuto is Executive Director at the Executive Board of Directors of the World Bank Group. He represents Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Philippines, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago. He is also a member of both the Committee on Development Effectiveness and the Budget Committee.
Prior to this position, Canuto served as Executive Director of the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund for Brazil, Cabo Verde, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Haiti, Nicaragua, Panama, Suriname, Timor Leste, and Trinidad & Tobago (2015-16), and Senior Advisor on Brics economies at the World Bank (2014-15).
In 2009-14 he completed a four-year assignment as the Bank’s Vice President and Head of the Poverty Reduction Network, a division of more than 700 economists and other professionals working on economic policy, poverty reduction, gender equality and development, and analytic work for client countries. In 2003, he was Brazilian State Secretary for International Affairs at the Ministry of Finance.
Canuto has an extensive academic background, serving as Professor of Economics at the University of São Paulo and University of Campinas in Brazil.
