Niels Thygesen is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Copenhagen. Before joining the university, he served at the Danish ministry of economic affairs. He was an independent member of the Delors committee on economic and monetary union between 1988-89.
Thygesen is a member of the board of Nordea Investment Funds, a fellow of the Royal Society, Copenhagen, founding member of the European Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee, and a member of the Euro-50 Group and the Trilateral Commission.
He has also been economic adviser to the Malaysian treasury, head of the monetary division and studies at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, adviser to the governor of Danmarks Nationalbank, chairman of the Danish Economic Council, member of the board of AP Moller-Maersk, vice chairman of Novo Foundation, and chairman of 3M Denmark, Mercato dei Titoli di Stato in Rome and EuroMTS in London.
Thygesen is the author of The sources and the impact of monetary changes, and co-author of several other books, including The role of monetary policy in stabilisation, From the European monetary system to European monetary union, and Globalisation and labour markets.
